Seville strolls

February 20, 2023

We got to Seville yesterday. We have both been here before so this was mostly just a stopover to relax for a night before heading over to Granada to see the Alhambra.

We spent the evening yesterday and the day today just strolling through streets in Seville. We walked by the Sevilla Cathedral and stopped by the Church of Santa Maria - not as famous but check out the ceilings here.

One of our goals for the trip was to catch some flamenco singing and dancing and did we get lucky. Harneet missed the Plaza de Espana when he was here last so we found our way there. This plaza is beautiful and I've written about it before. But this time we got to see a live flamenco show which was amazing. And probably more real than the bigger performances that I attended on my last trip. The singing and dancing was so very soulful and since the origins of flamenco lie with gypsies singing during their struggles, the street dancing felt more authentic. Here is a little glimpse below.

On the food side, jamon sandwiches are popular here. We found a small new place called Quarentino and then checked out Corta y Cata. At the latter they made us grab bread rolls from another store and then put together sandwiches with Iberian jamon and manchego cheese. They also packed it for our train ride. We also had to have tapas and tried out El Pasejo which had some delicious options including my much loved batatas e brava.

Now, as we were strolling up and down streets and the riverwalk and past an old bullfighting arena at night, we came across this large group of people carrying this huge structure and walking in tandem. On asking a local, she mentioned that this was a practice session for the processions that will happen during Semana Santa. In Spain, during the holy week before Easter, these enormous processions happen in Seville. Here, people carry large statues of Mother Mary and Jesus from their local church in Seville to the Seville Cathedral.

I was truly impressed by the coordination and amount of strength and practice that goes into this (there's almost a month to go before the actual processions). Check out a few pics down below. The things you learn when you allow yourself to just wander.

That was it for Seville. We are now on our train to Granada. Expect a post on that in the near future.
