Rhodos Part 3: Eastern Rhodes and birthday fun

October 6, 2022

This is my last post on Rhodes so I’m going to consolidate three days in here. It helps that we kept the last day pretty chill.

We had rented the car for three days and so had two more days left on it. Our goal for this second day on the road was to visit some sights in Eastern Rhodes.

But before doing so, we headed to old town again to this delightful bakery where we had breakfast every day. They had the best spinach and cheese pies and little biscuits that were very nostalgic to me. I would have taken pictures but we ate the pies so fast that I didn’t have a chance. We then stopped for coffee at a little joint we found called Monk Coffee Roasters. Greek coffee is generally too strong for me but this place made a mean mochaccino that gave us our coffee fix.

After stuffing up, we headed over to Tsampika Bay. There is a famous monastery there. After climbing what felt like 75000 steps, we got to the top. All of these monasteries are at the top of hills in Greece. It's crazy how people did this pretty regularly. It was beautiful though and soooo peaceful. Here are some pics from there.

After stopping to take a peek at the Tsampika bay beach - beautiful but super crowded, our next stop was Lindos. This is an old acropolis where they have maintained a lot of the original architecture. We were positively melting in the 90 degrees weather but climbed to see it anyway.

We peeked in at the Anthony Quinn bay in Lindos as well and were impressed. I wasn’t in a beach mood though so we didn’t hang out on the beach. I did take some gorgeous pictures though.

After these sight, we headed back to Old Town to walk the streets and eat more food. I wasn’t super impressed with this fancy restaurant we went to for dinner but at least it was pretty. I generally prefer hole in wall places since they are chill and have great food.

The heat exhausted us so we crashed that night and woke up early the next morning. That particular next morning was the most special day of the year (my birthday) and so I was obviously super excited!

We started the day with my favorites pies, biscuits and coffee before going to Falraki to be beach bums in the morning.

2 hours in - I declared myself bored so we headed back to Old Town to explore some more churches and gardens and walk about till our feet hurt.

This library had areas closed off to preserve but our friend here thought that it was a great shaded spot for a nap!

That evening, we did a fun group call with family (coordinated across 5 timezones) to cut a little semolina cake from that same bakery. Birthday goals complete!

We wrapped up the day with a cute little dinner at an off the beaten path restaurant. We enjoyed our dinner, returned the car and walked around the lively old Town to get some frozen yogurt after.

Our last day in Rhodes was very chill. We probably didn’t need the extra day but used it to just shoot the breeze, research Megan and eat more gyros. Yep, I haven’t mentioned gyros but we did eat them twice on this trip. Now gyros in Greece (at least in Rhodes and Athens and some islands) are different than what we get in the US. In that, they are much better. They consist of protein and cucumbers and tomatoes and fries in warm pita - not a wink of lettuce. Eating shawarmas in kuwait, again no lettuce, just cucumbers and tomatoes. We still need to figure out how to get these right in the US and do it quickly!

And that was it fort Rhodes. For more on where we went next, tune into my next post. Until then, Αντίο!
