Fika

October 6, 2022

The in progress vacation I wrote about in my last post begins in Stockholm. We had never been to a Scandivanian country before and were excited to check out a new place. Among our options, Sweden won!

We spent two days in this carbon-neutral city and loved it. Stockholm isn't huge and I think we hit most of what we wanted to see in these two days.

The first target on our list was experiencing fika. Fika means "coffee break". It is a Swedish concept of taking a break during the day to have a cup of coffee and some pastries. We did this twice a day for two days and tried out a princess cake (watch for a blog post in the future when I try making this), cinnamon rolls (delicious and not nauseatingly sweet) and cardamom rolls.

I love cute coffee shop signs and so had to share this gem from Gamla Stan (old town)!

All grownups were once children but only a few remember it.

We spent a bunch of time roaming the historic and modern town and, of course, checked out some popular sights. This included Storkyrkan (oldest church in Stockholm) and walking along the large lakes there.

The battleship museum Vasa was highly recommended in forums that we browsed during our flight to Stockholm. With the "brilliant" guidance of Google, we walked around half a lake to take a boat that took us back to where we started before taking us to our final destination 🤦🏽. Disappointing but definitely helped us justify another Fika.

The Vasa museum was amazing and had an actual battle ship that is super well preserved. It sunk on its maiden voyage but most of it was recovered. If you are ever in Stockholm, you do not want to miss this (coming from a person who really does not enjoy museums).

There wasn't a lot besides Fika in local Swedish food that we were excited about. Their sandwiches were good and there were plenty of vegetarian options which worked great for me (yeah, I turned vegetarian with some fish in my diet once in a while around 2 years ago).

My last stop was a recommendation from my sister. We went over to the Stockholm library. It's old and round and round and round. I love libraries and so spent a dizzying time in the above-mentioned rounds. There were parts under construction so I couldn't use ladders but it was definitely worth it anyway.

So that was a summary of our short and sweet rendezvous in Stockholm before we headed over to Rhodes in Greece for around a week. Tune in to my next post for a rundown on that!

We will be back in Stockholm for another night tomorrow before heading back to Seattle. Just enough time for another Fika!

P.S. Torture device in the Vasa Museum
